Rotary East Nassau Accepts $228,000 Hurricane Relief Donation from KPMG

Nassau, Bahamas; June 21, 2020. For Immediate Release. From being the first relief group on the ground in Haiti after the 2010 Earthquake, to coordinating massive relief efforts in The Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian, and spearheading the world’s efforts to eradicate Polio, Rotary Clubs have long been on the frontlines of humanitarian efforts across the globe. These efforts are supported not only by hardworking volunteer Rotarians, but also by partnerships with some of the world’s largest corporate entities.

At its most recent virtual meeting The Rotary Club of East Nassau was proud to accept, on behalf of the Bahamas Rotary Clubs’ Rotary Disaster Relief Fund, a $228,000 donation from KPMG for Hurricane Dorian relief efforts in Grand Bahama and Abaco.

“We’re so appreciative of our corporate partners like KPMG”, said Barry Rassin, immediate Past President of Rotary International and a member of the Rotary Club of East Nassau. “Financial donations of this magnitude can have such a tangible impact on relief efforts, particularly when paired with an all-volunteer organization like Rotary. We are in a unique position at Rotary to ensure that every penny goes directly to where it’s needed most, and not towards administrative expenses.”

In addition to raising funds through its partners and team locally, KPMG Bahamas was able to solicit donations  through its global network of member firms and received contributions from as far away as Bermuda, Cayman, BVI, Barbados, China, Malta, Mexico, and Belgium, as well as KPMG International.

“On behalf of the entire KPMG Family we are pleased to be able to make this donation in the amount of $228,000 to the Rotary Hurricane Dorian Disaster Relief Fund. This is in addition to $6,000 that has already been transferred to the Fund, bringing KPMG’s total contribution to $234,000”, said John Lopez, Senior Partner at KPMG. “We hope that this donation will help to provide you with the resources needed to continue assisting those impacted by Hurricane Dorian. We salute all the hard work your organization has been doing and are confident that your efforts are appreciated not only by those directly benefitting but also by other members of the local community including us here at KPMG.”

“Partnerships like this demonstrate the global reach of both Rotary and its friends”, said Francisco de Cardenas, President of the Rotary Club of East Nassau. “All of us here in the Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas have seen an outpouring of support not just from our friends, families and partners locally, but from organizations and individuals across the globe. We’re so thankful for friends like KPMG as we work to help rebuild the lives of our Bahamian brothers and sisters impacted by Hurricane Dorian”.

The Rotary Bahamas Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund is committed to the long-term rebuilding of the communities affected by Hurricane Dorian. Here are some of the ways Rotary has helped so far:

  • Funding the labor for the repair of fishing boats from East End Grand Bahama and securing a grant to outfit 30 already repaired boats with new engines to get back to fishing.

  • Funding for the repair of homes in High Rock which GB Rotary’s Team SeaGrape is overseeing.

  • Provision of supplies to enable repair of 7 homes in Abaco so far.
