Axis Notes for the meeting of May 1, 2015
President Elmer called the meeting to order at 1:05pm
Invocation was done by the 'Great Gobbler' PP Robin Brownrigg.
Mike Russell read the list of visiting Rotarians which included: Taneka Thompson; Shaun Ingraham, RCE; Brian Knowles, RCWN; Jim Roberts, Dotty Rae and Joan Pinder from RCN. Uli, Corinne and Phil Andrews also had guests.
Members were asked to 'dig deep' because fines collected on Friday were going to given to disaster relief effort for Nepal. The total collected was $1,123. Therefore, a minimum of $2,246 would be donated as the Community Service matched members donations.
PE Jason pinned David Slatter and Desiray Ingraham with their PHS+2 pins. Thank you for your continued support of TRF!
SAA Mike Lightbourne fined Robin $100 for shaving his head and he said he would pay. But when Sir D was asked to double the fine, his gesture of refusal was unequivocal. The sergeant went on to tell a few good jokes.

Announcements
Corinne asked for help with putting up signs, selling raffle tickets and beer and ball spotters for our big golf fundraiser set for Monday, May 11 at the Ocean Club Golf course. Phil Andrews said golf had made $103,000 to date so still quite a bit shy of $120,000 that is usually made on this event. He also invited members to sign up for the tournament as only four RCEN members had done so.
JP brought the good news that our club had won the softball game against our Rotaract club. He praised the coaching skill of Eddie Gardner for bringing it home. Congrats to the players and next time we need to get more of our women members out there.
Guest speaker(s)
PP Geoff Andrews introduced our guest speaker by saying he needed no introduction if you have been following their escapades in the Tribune and that brought Mark Roberts to the podium and Shaune Adderley to handle the slide presentation.
Mark said he had been asked to speak at the club even before he and Shaune went on the expedition to the North Pole so he came back to report. Originally when he was asked to do the trip he had refused but when the offer was made a second time it was delivered more as a challenge and that clinched it for him. Mark and Shaune, who had never seen snow before or experienced anything colder than a Bahamian cold front, trained for three months before leaving for their trip on April 7 via London. Here they met up with their New Zealander guides, then on to Longyearbyen, Spitzbergen, where a tourist had been eaten by polar bears two months previously, then to the Russian camp at Barneo where they met their 16-dog team that would take them to the North Pole.
The window of opportunity to take this trip is short as the North Pole has no sunlight for five months of the year but when the sunlight comes so does the thaw making it unsafe for human travel. But Mark maintained one of the scariest parts of the trip was the Russian equipment they had to fly in with all their sleds and dog cages and tents. They landed about four kilometres from the North Pole on April 15 and there began their five day adventure, eating frozen food thawed by hot water; wearing no less than seven layers of clothes; sleeping in tents that they had to uncover from drifts every morning; listening to the howling wind and creaking ice. Mark said it felt like they were in a ziplock bag and God was shaking you up in it. But for all the hardships they showed us some fantastic photographs, many of which featured the Bahamian flag in very unusual places. Would he do it again? No, but what he knows he achieved something amazing.
Mark and Shaune were thanked by JP who assured the animal lovers who were probably wondering about the dogs sleeping outside in the snow that it was fine as they are bred to do that and suffer no ill effects.
The RATW toast was given by President Elmer at 2:10pm
